The Gilt Remake

A theatre project made in collaboration with students at De Montfort University in 1995.

The piece is based on The Big Combo, a classic film noir starring Cornel Wilde. It reworks, reorientates and regurgitates the tropes of the gangster movie, sending them up at one moment and honouring them the next. The finale is a fiercely physical piece of choreography built from fragments of gangster threat.

Like other pieces of this era such as Stampede and Chemical Wedding, The Gilt Remake processes popular culture to bring its social and political concerns vividly into focus.
