Gift App Brighton Museum

Gift will be available to try at the Munch Museum until March 2020.

Our museum app Gift is now available to try at the Munch Museum in Oslo. Visitors to ‘Everything We Own – the Art of Edvard Munch and More’ will be able to select paintings and objects from the collection and send them as a digital playlist to someone they care about.

The exhibition itself was bequeathed as a gift by Edvard Munch to the people of Oslo in 1940, and comprises a collection of nearly 28,000 paintings, prints, drawings and sculptures.

The Gift app lets you use your phone to take photos of the collection and send them along with a recorded personal message. What you choose to include is totally up to you. You might find a picture that triggers a memory of a time you spent with someone, or just features their favourite colour.

Gift was set up to develop the role of virtual museums and galleries in establishing meaningful experiences – allowing for personal, complex and emotional encounters with art and cultural heritage. Find out more about the exhibition and the Gift project here.

Gift is made by Blast Theory in collaboration with the Mixed Reality Lab at the University of Nottingham and with the support of Royal Pavilion & Museums as part of an EU-funded research initiative bringing together artists, designers, museum professionals and computer scientists to explore new forms of museum experiences. Gift is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 727040. It is a collaboration with IT University Copenhagen, University of Nottingham, University of Uppsala, Blast Theory, Next Game, the Europeana Foundation and Culture24.
