Blast Theory

We’re offering five young people the opportunity to be mentored by the Blast Theory artists from January 2020. The positions are available for people aged 16 to 25 living in the Brighton and Portslade area.

About the positions:

  • Mentoring can take the form of a one-off conversation or a few sessions (up to 6 approximately), to follow the development of an idea or stage of working that you need some help with
  • You must be between 16 and 25 years old – at school, college, unemployed, working, in training or in some other situation we’ve not mentioned
  • The deadline to apply is 5pm on 13th January and this can be made by yourself, a teacher, a parent or guardian, a support worker or a friend. We will let you know if successful by the end of January.

My time at Blast Theory was really beneficial to my creative development. I had the chance to be around like-minded individuals, which helped to change the way I look at personal creative projects.” – Former Blast Theory Mentee

A bit about Blast Theory:

Blast Theory is renowned internationally as one of the most adventurous artists’ groups using interactive media, creating groundbreaking new forms of performance and interactive art that mixes audiences across the internet, live performance and digital broadcasting.  We have been making work since 1991. Our work has been shown at the Venice Biennale, Sundance Film Festival and at Tate Britain. Commissioners include Channel 4, the BBC and the Royal Opera House.

Ju Row Farr, Blast Theory Artist and Mentor:

I am one of the founding members and one of the three artists in Blast Theory. I am passionate about helping other people find their way in making and experiencing art, so as a mentor I can offer one-off advice about ideas and what next, or a more detailed set of mentoring that follows a project or a plan. Each session will be an hour in length and can be arranged to suit your needs, but I think regular times work best.

Over the years I have mentored scores of people – my approach is down to earth, practical and tailored to an individuals needs. I am offering mentoring to young people who have a variety of arts practises and to people who would like to get into the arts but don’t know if it’s right and where to start. You might be at school doing art, at university about to finish a degree in performance, or be into making computer games. You might be interested in running a creative company or you want to know how to develop your skills. Or you may have an idea you want to run past someone with lots of experience.

What to do next:

Tell us why you want to be mentored, describe your work (if you have a website or any images you could include that would be great, but not essential!) and why you would benefit from mentoring with a Blast Theory artist. Submit your answers using the online form here.

Take a look Our Work to see the types and range of past works we have made.
