Because of all that has been happening in the world in the last two years, we will not be doing a call-out for our Residency Programme this December. We recognise that it is difficult for people to be able to devote time to their artistic practice while still managing their financial commitments. And as we do not receive any funding for our programme at the moment, we are currently unable to provide any financial support to our residents. While we’re very lucky to have space available to offer, we are excited to look at how we can improve the programme and create a model where we are able to pay residents.
We have been running our Residency Programme here in our studios at 20 Wellington Road in Portslade, Brighton, for the last 12 years. We’ve hosted and mentored a fantastic array of over 80 artists, makers, thinkers and writers: from young makers to people much further along in their career, from local to international practitioners. We have built lasting friendships with some of them. There have been talks and walks and tests and games; takeovers of the building, of the streets, on the Downs and online. Residents have worked on a dog cam, an aroma workshop, a medicament for a predicament, a sound glove work, an iPad installation, GIF projections, a VR live mashup, future imaginary signs in cities, a game about the probation system, crazy golf, a work about conservation and the history of bark cloth, a series of talks about chronic illness and organ transplants, to name only a few.
So, we will be making an announcement in the New Year about the space: and we’ll let you know as soon as we are ready to announce the new residency model.
