Video still for What is the alternative to screen-based maps?

While on her residency with us in December 2015, Rachel Henson focused on developing a navigaitonal tool to guide a solo walker on a journey from a residential area to the countryside. She experimented with homemade devices intending to add to the atmosphere of the surroundings rather than distract the walker’s attention in the way that maps and screens often do. With input from other artists, the team tested a variety of methods and created a device that reacts to the direction it’s pointed in by beating faster when you hold it to your chest.

Rachel also wrote a guest blog about the process of creating these tools.

Rachel worked with Nikki Pugh, Clara Garcia Fraile, Dan Belasco Rogers and Simon de Bakker on this project.
