We are looking for new faces for upcoming paid freelance filmmaking and production assistant roles. To get on our radar for 2021, please get in touch.

About you

You can be at any stage in your career, and have a variety of interests. We’d love to hear from you.

If you’re a person of colour, have a disability (including ‘invisible’ disabilities such as dyslexia or autism), or are from a lower socioeconomic background, we encourage you to apply. You can make an application in an alternative format if you wish, please see the ‘How to apply’ section below for details.

Production support

We’re looking for people to support our projects and general studio production work, at assistant level. Below is a list of desirable skills and experience that we’re looking for. We say ‘desirable’ because we do not expect you to have experience in every one of these areas. So even if you don’t ‘tick all the boxes’, please do get in touch.

  • Previous experience working with a team
  • Previous experience with administration, for example answering phones, managing the diary and sending emails
  • Previous experience with research, for example online research to buy or rent something
  • Basic computer skills and use of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word)
  • Previous experience working on creative or tech projects: for example you may have created artwork or worked with others on an art or tech project
  • Experience of using social media channels (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram)
  • Experience of using photo or video editing tools like Photoshop and Premiere Pro
  • An interest in web technologies: for example you may have created or helped to create a website or blog
  • An interest in coding and software testing: for example you may have completed an online coding course, attended a coding club like Codebar or tried playing around with code in your spare time

Filmmakers

We’re looking for filmmakers who are confident to shoot and edit short documentaries that look and sound great. You don’t have to be established in your career, or have lots of experience, but we would like to see some examples of your work when you apply. These could be personal projects as well as paid work.

The opportunities

Blast Theory works with a wide range of freelancers every year. We often work with the same people repeatedly: once you know and trust each other, it’s easy to work together again. Sometimes positions have to be filled very quickly and there’s no time for an open call. The downside is that we’re not able to expand the pool of people we work with as often as we’d like. Working with the same people is great, but you miss out on engaging fresh talent, voices and perspectives.

This is why we’re running this open call. We’re not advertising for a specific role, but we know we have a number of short and longer-term opportunities coming up in 2021. So if we think we might be a good fit for each other, we’ll get in touch with you as soon as we have a suitable opportunity next year.

Equal opportunities

We’re an equal opportunities employer and encourage applications from people who are less represented in our sector: particularly people of colour, those with disabilities (including ‘invisible’ disabilities such as dyslexia or autism), and people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.

While we recognise that some restrictions apply to specific disabilities, we’ll try our best to make reasonable adaptations to accommodate your needs. If you have access needs, please email [email protected] with details so we can make reasonable adjustments for you.

How to apply

To apply please send a brief description of your background and experience by completing this short questionnaire https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/2W9XRVN

If you prefer, you can send in a short video or audio recording instead. You can shoot/record these on your smartphone, they don’t have to be produced or edited professionally. You can also apply by phone if this is an easier option for you.

If you have any questions about applying or would like to arrange a phone call for your application, please email [email protected].

Blast Theory will be closed between 21st December 2020 and 5th January 2021. We’ll try to accommodate applications submitted after 6th January due to access requirements (for example, if you contact us during the Christmas period and need to speak to someone about applying in a different format).

Please also complete this brief monitoring survey: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/2D77DPH
It’s completely anonymous and won’t be read together with your application.

Please submit your application by Wednesday 6th January 2021, 10am

Applicants must be aged 18 +
